A drip system or drip irrigation can be defined as one form of micro-irrigation system having the power to save water as well as nutrients by making space for water to drip down slowly near to the plant roots. It can be done either from the top of the soil surface or can also be buried below the soil surface. In other words, we can say that Drip irrigation is a popular controlled irrigation method which supplies water slowly to the roots of multiple rowed plants. It is one of the six significant ways which are used for the growing of plants hydroponically. There are 2 types of drip system of irrigation.

1.    Surface drip irrigation – In this method water is supplied to the soil surface directly above the plant root system. It is mostly used for high-value crops.

2.    Subsurface drip irrigation – In this method water is supplied directly on the root system. It is majorly suitable for growing the row crops.

The reasons behind calling drip system the best technique of irrigation: 

•    Easy Installation: Drip irrigation is not in need of excavating and hardly disrupts affect the integrity of the landscape bed at the time of installation. Tubing is done all across the area which is in lack of watering. In short, this system can be quickly moved and are not permanent like conventional styled irrigation systems.

•    Supports better plant growth: This method helps in penetrating water slowly and deeply inside soil, distributing moisture precisely in the location where it is needed that is roots. Plants grow up quickly when water is supplied regularly without causing stress in the roots which may happen due to the scarcity of water.

•    No soil erosion: As there is uniformity in the supply of water in this method, there is hardly any scope of soil erosion, and that is good for the healthy growth of the plants.

•    Water Conservation: In a drip irrigation system, water gets delivered directly on the ground surface and not sprayed out across an area. Due to this direct application of water, there is water saving. 90 percent applied water gets sucked by the soil, and a negligible amount is evaporated.

•    Saves money: Being an adequate irrigation system, it helps in reducing the monthly water bill which in turn protects your money.

•    Weed control:  Drip irrigation supply water directly to the area surrounding the plant. Due to this weed seeds remains water starved and limited germination happens.
