A work of art is a term used for artistic creation. It includes fine arts, sculptures, pieces of a jeweler, apparels, interior designs, folk arts, and visual arts such as photographs, films, visual computer program, computer animation, etc.

The hierarchical scale is mostly used in fine arts and paintings. It is the manipulations made in the sizing and spacing of different elements in the picture to emphasize the importance of it.

For example: For a painting emphasizing Statue of Liberty, the main focus must be on the statue than on its surroundings. In this case, you give a blurred vision to its surrounding and a clear and broader view of the sculpture. This manipulation is made based on its hierarchical scale.

In arts, the order of importance for any element can be given in many ways using colors, background manipulation, texture, etc. The balancing of these elements is done by scaling into certain proportions. The balance is of two types - symmetrical and asymmetrical.

  • Symmetrical Balance: In this, an imaginary line is passed through the center of the art-making both the parts into an equal division. This type of balance is used t convey a sense of formality, permanence order and rationality.

  • Asymmetrical Balance: Here both the parts separated by the line are not identical. This often depicts more liveliness and a variety of visual interest.

Different types of scales are applied when the elements need to be more focused. The influence of scale in visual experience is based on the message which is conveyed by the artist to the audience.

In the industry of advertising, Design relies completely on a concept which is of thousands of years old. Yes, we are talking about Hierarchical scale. Well, it is an age-old technique which is applied in art, and majorly in sculpture as well as in painting. In this technique, the artist uses unnatural amount or scale for presenting the relative value of a figure used in the deception. In common man terms, “The bigger the art is, the more is its importance.” During the Dark Ages period, the natives of the era with higher status used to have larger proportions when compared to serfs.

You can also call it manipulations that are specifically made for sizing and spacing of multiple elements present in the picture for emphasizing the importance as per hierarchy. Element balancing is done in two ways.

•  Symmetrical Balance: This is a line of imaginary passed via the center for art-dividing it into two equal parts. This style of balancing is done to convey a feeling of formality, rationality, and permanence order.
•  Asymmetrical Balance: In this case, the parts separated using a line are non- identical. Well, such form of balancing depicts higher liveliness and the interest of a variety of visual.

If we need to define the meaning of Visual hierarchy in modern terms then it can be presented as an arrangement made for graphic elements present in specific design based on elements importance. The ocular weight represents the value of the element present in the design’s hierarchy, to make the viewer’s eyes understand what you need to focus and that too in which order. Hope the above description clearly describes which work of art uses a hierarchical scale and why.
