Parenting style refers to how parents engage with their children and how they raise their children. Every parent has different characteristics and a different parenting style. Each of the parenting styles has a different way of approaching children and has different outcomes. Some can benefit you and help you teach discipline to your child whereas some of these approaches can have a negative impact on your relationship with your child. Parenting style matters a lot and makes a huge difference in your child’s inner development.

According to researchers, there are four types of parenting style:

  1. Authoritarian
  2. Authoritative
  3. Permissive
  4. Uninvolved

All of these have different characteristics. Let’s discuss these approaches in detail and understand the outcomes of each:

  1. Authoritarian – Authoritarian parenting is often characterized by strict rules and high demands by the parents. According to this approach, parents approach strict controls on their children. This approach can have a negative impact on the child’s mind as their opinions are often not valued. Punishing the children for their mistakes is essential. But it is also vital to evaluate their choices and beliefs. They might develop low self-esteem and often lie to avoid punishments from the parents.

  2. Authoritative – It is a style wherein both the parents and children communicate, and parents help their children to grow socially, academically, and emotionally too. Authoritative parents not only provide freedom and praise their children but also monitors and criticizes their wrong behavior. Children of authoritative parents are often more confident, happy, and good learners. They tend to have excellent decision-making skills. This approach is better than the authoritarian approach as it is essential for parents to be more flexible and manage between love and responsibility.
  3. Permissive – Permissive parents are quite lenient and impose fewer rules and demands on their children. Children of permissive parents struggle to make decisions, have poor skills and are more prone to substance abuse. This type of parenting can lead to several risks and problems and can affect your child’s growth negatively.
  4. Uninvolved – Uninvolved parenting is that in which parents don’t get involved with their children and often neglect them. It is not an ideal approach of parenting and children might behave poorly in different areas of life because of the lack of support and guidance by the parents.

Comparing all the characteristics and effects, we can conclude that authoritative is the most effective and ideal approach. This will help deliver more positive outcomes. This is the most balanced approach as parents practice democracy in this approach.

Parenting style can be defined as how parents need to engage themselves with their kids and what steps they will take to raise them. It’s true that all parents are not the same and possess different characteristics. They prefer to follow a different style of parenting. Every individual parenting style follows a different approach towards children and also has multiple outcomes.
The relationship of child-parent creates a huge influence on major aspects of child development. When parents' behaviors and approach to dealing with child create a positive effect on children we can see its reflection in the form of self-esteem, achievement in school, cognitive development, and healthy behavior.

Before we answer which parenting style is known to give positive outcomes we need to know about parenting styles.

1.  Authoritarian: In this style parents remain unresponsive with a strict set of rules and higher expectations from children. They expect blind obedience from kids. Children deliver poor performance in academics, social skill, self-esteem and delinquency, to name few among many.

2.  Authoritative: Parents remain responsive and warm towards children with a clear set of rules. The expectation remains high but still, they value independence and act supportive. Children show excellent performance, social skills, strong mentally with lower delinquency.

3.  Permissive: In this style, parents remain warm and responsive towards their children with fewer rules. They are indulgent and lenient. Children show impulsive behavior and are egoistic. Have poor types of social skills and problematic relationship with all.

4.  Neglect full: Here the parents are very cold and unresponsive with an indifferent attitude towards kids. Hardly have any type of rule for the kids. Children show impulsive behavior, the tendency to suicide and delinquency.

But above all Authoritative is the best style of parenting and the results or outcomes are best.
