What is the difference between machine learning and deep learning?

Living life on my own terms

We live in the age of artificial intelligence. The power of artificial intelligence backs most of the technologies we use today. This makes it important for you to learn how artificial intelligence works. AI is based on two main concepts, and that is machine learning and deep learning. Both these terms are used interchangeably as if they mean the same. But in reality, it’s not the same.

Difference between learning and deep learning

For every organization, it is important to understand the difference between deep learning and machine learning before; they plan to implement it.

1. Machine learning

To define it in simple terms machine learning is the subset of artificial intelligence. In other words, all machine learning is counted as AI. However, not all AI is counted as machine learning. Machine learning is considered to be the best tool used for understanding, analyzing and identifying the pattern in the given data.

The idea of machine learning is mainly based on the fact that computers can be trained to automate various tasks. This is mainly in the case of tasks that are difficult for humans to accomplish. In short, machine learning is capable of taking decisions on their own with less human intervention. This advancement in technology has made companies leverage machine learning.

2. Deep learning

Deep learning, on the other hand, is the subset of machine learning. It is computer software that is equipped to replicate the network of neurons present in a brain. Deep learning can also be described as the next evolution in machine learning.

The algorithms of deep learning are mainly inspired by the data processing patterns present in the human brain. For example, we use our brains to classify and identify various type of patterns and information. The same can be taught to deep learning so that they can complete tasks that humans find difficult.

Every time our brain is fed with new information, our brain starts comparing it to an already identified item to make sense. This is the same logic that is used by deep learning algorithms.

From the above-mentioned points, it is clear that both machine learning and deep learning are part of artificial intelligence. However, both of these components are different from each other. In other words, both the mentioned components work differently. They have different algorithms to follow.
