When there is a question on spirituality, many people think that it is a term related to religion. Though religion and spirituality are closely related to each other, they are different. Religion is an identification of a person by birth or by law which has specific rules of worship, prayer, beliefs, and values. On the other hand, spirituality is a set of practices that is practiced by a person for his mental and spiritual growth to understand a deeper meaning of life.
In one word, when a person tries to practice his religion, he first needs to be religious from the inner core of the heart. He will have a particular religion like Hinduism or Islam or Christianity or Sikhism, etc. where you follow specific rules advised in your Religious books. But, if you are a spiritual person, you will go beyond these particular rules and follow your virtues. All these set of disciplines helps you in growing your spiritual self. A spiritual person is more concerned about his values, morals, and ethics. On the other hand, a religious person will blindly follow the ideologies shared by his religion.
It is not necessary that if you are a religious person, you cannot be a spiritual one or vice versa. You can follow both religious as well as your spiritual disciplines at the same time. What mostly happens is that a religious person who is blindly following the rules of his religion may not have a proper understanding of his life or hardly have a love for himself. A spiritual person is the one who has a deeper meaning and a positive approach to life. He loves his soul deeply. If you are a spiritual as well a religious person at the same time, you will better have a clear understanding of your religion too. You can have peace of mind and soul.
A religious person sometimes doesn’t have a bright outlook on life. They may become judgemental when any of the rules are not followed. A spiritual person is non-judgemental and has a clear perspective of whatever he is doing, even if he is a religious person.
The difference between religion and spirituality is not many, and if you can follow your soul correctly, you can become a perfect religious as well as a spiritual person.
