MSME is the short form of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises whereas SSI stands for Small Scale Industries.

An enterprise is called a Micro-Enterprise if:

  • The investment done in plant and machinery does not exceed Rs.25 lacs if the business is related to manufacturing or production of goods and
  • The investment in equipment does not exceed Rs.10 lacs if the business is engaged in providing services.

An enterprise is called a Small Enterprise if:

  • Small enterprise: The investment and business’s financial worth is between Rs 25 lakhs and Rs 5 crores and not exceeding the higher.

An enterprise is called a Medium Enterprise if:

  • Medium enterprise: The investment and business’s financial worth is between Rs 5 crores to Rs 10 crores.

If the major activity of the business is to provide services, the MSME’s are categorized as below:

  1. Microenterprise: The investment in equipment will not be more Rs 10 lakhs
  2. Small enterprise: The investment in the equipment would be between starting from Rs 10 lakhs to Rs 2 crores.
