Every moment matters

Chemical engineers are those specialists who are involved in the manufacturing of large scale of fertilizers and pesticides which are needed by farmers and agriculturists for healthy growing crops without affecting the environment. Fertilizers are the source of nutrients essential which is must for the healthy growth of plants. Pesticides, for example, herbicide and insecticide are used for protecting plants from an attack of pests. If that is not done then, crop destruction will happen which will lead to a massive loss for the agriculture industry and for the farmers too who leave on earning from the sale of crops.

Agriculture is one of those sectors of the industry which needs the support of several other industries which gets involved with it and plays important roles to make the production of agriculture sustainable as well as profitable. Among those supporting sectors for agriculture, Chemical Engineering is the one.

The Agriculture industry is in need of Seeds for cultivation, and the Chemicals produced by the chemical industry are used for proper cleaning of the seeds before they are placed in the farmland.  Herbicides, Fertilizers, pesticides are some of the inputs from the chemical industry which are needed for cultivation and protection of crops from pests.  The produced crops and fruits need the support of chemicals for more extended preservation period and processing. If we take note of the perishable crops for example fruits and vegetables, all need chemicals for ripening as well as preserving.

Chemical engineering, in reality, played a dominant role in improving the quality of production in the agriculture field. Chemical fertilizers are something which paved the way for introducing a green revolution in the agriculture world and is a gift from the industry of chemical engineering.

The primary responsibility of the chemical engineers is to make the designing and troubleshooting of the processes which are needed for the production of chemicals, foods, fuels, pharmaceuticals, and biological, and there are many more on the list. Support of chemical engineers is needed to maximize productivity and product quality of the crops with minimization of costs.

In short, we can say that chemical engineering contributed enormously to the industry of agriculture by offering different products which are essential for the success of the sector of agriculture. Chemical engineers can also be a part of industrial processing of specific crops for example extraction of oil from the oilseeds, Extraction of sugarcane juice and transforming it into sugar cubes, etc. They can also play a significant role in improving the irrigation systems depending on the nature of the crop or fruits cultivated in agricultural lands or farms.

Above is a brief about the various applications of chemical engineering in agriculture.
