The person who is responsible for all the visual elements in a movie is referred to as the cinematographer. The decisions on the lighting, the color of the shot, positioning actors, zooming in or out, field depth, usage of techniques and the lens that needs to be used are some made by the cinematographer. The cinematography is that aspect in filmmaking which touches upon all elements in making a good picture.

Let us take a look at how to get into cinematography.

  • Patience is imminent: As a cinematographer, you will be communicating and working with different people like actors, producers, and directors. You are the most important person who deals with everything visual in a film. While working in a team, you have to maintain a lot of patience, and it is you who would be making the others’ efforts fruitful. You have to make a vision that will be agreeable to everyone.

  • Study the techniques: The technology is ever evolving, and if you want to stay high in the competition you need to keep yourself updated on the latest in technology and techniques. Many offer you updates and more information on camera language. If you want to be better, you should be ready to push your limits and work toward excellence.

  • Networking helps: Whatever be the profession having the right contacts has its perks. As a cinematographer, you need to develop your network. It doesn’t mean that you have to keep offering everyone a business card but meeting people will help you know of opportunities that can further enhance your career prospects. To attend seminars, workshops, red carpet events, screenings, and mixers and broaden your social network.

  • Moving with the camera: This is one of the key components that you need to know when becoming a cinematographer. You need to know when to move the camera, where to, how to and why. And these answers do not come by with ease. You need to start working as assistants and interns to learn more in the field. Every move you make, your camera gives an impact on the lighting, contrast, and density of the film.

  • Never say no: More than everything else, you need the determination to keep moving forward. It is important to keep looking for opportunities that will help your career and your learning process. Do not wait until you get the opportunity but keep yourself busy with learning the latest as that will come in handy when you get the chance.

The cinematographer has an important role to play in the movie industry. If you want to be a successful one, you need to work hard towards your objective.
