A teacher can be defined as a professional who supports students to gather knowledge and competence. The teacher specializes in various subjects and teaches the student the subject they are specialized in.
If you wish to become a teacher, then a question may come to your mind as to how long it will take to become one. Well, it depends entirely on how educated you are and what type of teacher you wish to become.
There are some levels of teaching for which there are different types of teachers in the schools of India.
1. Pre-Primary School Teacher: Educates students in the age group of 3 to 5 years. This level of teachers is the one where the young students meet when they first step in school life. You need to have either Nursery Teachers Training (NTT) for the 1-year duration or must complete the Diploma in Early Childhood Education (D.E.C.Ed.), which is of 2 years duration after completing class 12th.
2. Primary School teacher: If you wish to become a primary school teacher, then you need to complete a Diploma (D.Ted.), which is of 2-year duration. This group belongs to the students of the age group of 6 to 12 years. Many also complete a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) for 4 years to become a Primary school teacher. Students from grade 1 to 8 falls in the primary school category. The teacher needs to choose the subject he wishes to teach and need to have a master's degree in it.
3. Secondary School Teacher: To become a secondary level teacher, one needs to have a B.ed degree, and it is a 2-year program for which you need to have a minimum Bachelor's degree in Arts, science, commerce stream (B.A., B.Sc or B.com.) as the minimum qualification. The teachers need to teach students of class 9 till 12
To get qualified as a teacher in any of the levels mentioned above, you need to be eligible in the entrance tests taken for the same.
TET- Teacher eligibility test: Well, this test is known in various names in different states and taken by the respective state government education board. One needs to be D.Ed or B.ed to appear in the test.
CTET- Central Teacher eligibility test: This entrance clearance is a must for teachers of central government or private school.
One needs to score well and above 60% in the above entrance examination based on NCTE norms.
