Inhale confidence Exhale doubt

Science has developed tremendously in the past few decades, which have made our lives easier. But on the contrary, the ill effects of science flourished too. One such file is the use of nuclear energy for the production of massive amounts of electricity. In controlled amount, these traditions are not harmful to our body, but the moment their concentration increases, our body starts degenerating rapidly.

What is Ionization Radiation?

Ionization Radiation is a form of energy which is released by atoms, that travels as electromagnetic waves (in the form of gamma/X-rays) or as particle waves( in the form of alpha, beta, neutrons).

In this article, let’s discuss some of the best ways of reducing exposure to ionization radiation effectively.

  • Installing Radiation Detectors
One thing to remember is that we cannot sense ionization. Humans can easily detect other forms of radiation like heat radiation, light radiation, but not ionization. For that, we need to install radiation detectors to ensure that we are exposed to radiation beyond the critical level.

  • Switching to Time Distance and Shielding
One of the best ways to reduce the amount of radiation is by increasing the distance between the radiation source and the person. The radiation can be reduced further by placing a shield between the source and the person.  Alternatively, by reducing the time of exposure to radiation, one can keep the rational level in check.

  • Storing and labeling the radiation sources
For storing the radiation sources, properly labeled thick lead boxes should be used. The thick lead walls prevent the ionizing rays from penetrating out of the box.

  • Using lead-lined aprons
The workers of a nuclear plant or places where they are exposed to ionization radiation quite often, they need to wear specially designed lead aprons to prevent the harmful rays from penetrating the body and damaging the tissues and vital organs.

  • Using lead strips
Along with lead aprons, lead strips should be installed on every worker’s suit. This helps in analyzing the amount of radiation to which the workers are exposed.

  • Using face masks and respirators
You should use proper face masks or respirators in areas where there are airborne radiation particles.

One should be very alert while handling radiation sources. Workers should always wear the necessary clothing to control the amount of radiation they are being exposed to. The radiation sources once exhausted can still emit harmful radiations, so proper care should be taken while disposing of them.
