What All You Need to Know As An AWS Beginner? 14 June, 2021

Cloud computing is an ever-evolving technology in the modern market and providing strong assistance to organizations daily. This platform is capable of tolerating any level of workload. This post is a brief AWS tutorial for beginners that include the objectives, features, and functionalities of AWS. At the end of this AWS step-by-step guide, we will provide some knowledge on long-lasting storage and strongly performing databases. After covering the pros and cons of AWS, we will talk about various career opportunities as an AWS developer. Let’s begin with Amazon Web Services Tutorial!

Amazon Web Services (AWS) - An Introduction

With the advent of cloud computing and increased use of AWS, many candidates are aggressively looking for AWS certification. But before jumping onto the career benefits, we should first understand what AWS is exactly!

AWS is a combination of various cloud computing services and products. One of the world’s biggest tech giant Amazon offers servers, storage facility, networking, CDN, email, security, and mobile development services. There are two major divisions of AWS - first, Amazon’s virtual machine services, and second, Amazon’s storage services.

What is the objective of Amazon Web Services (AWS)?

AWS is a protected cloud service platform that offers various functionalities, including database storage, content delivery, compute power, and so on to organizations to help them grow and succeed. In simple language, an AWS can do the following things:

  • It hosts dynamic websites by running web servers on the cloud
  • It stores a large number of files on the cloud with full security so that you can access it anytime anywhere
  • It uses popular databases such as SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle and PostgreSQL to store data
  • It manages a content delivery network (CDN) to ease the delivery of static as well as dynamic content across the world
  • It helps in sending bulk emails to a customer base

History of AWS

  • First launched in 2002 as a free service to help developers in building websites
  • First cloud products - Simple Storage Service (S3) and Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) were launched in 2006 to help businesses develop applications using Amazon’s infrastructure
  • Competition became tough when Google and Microsoft joined the cloud market as competitors in 2008 and 2009 respectively
  • AWS Virtual Private Cloud was launched in 2009 to provide companies with a private and self-centered partition of the AWS data center
  • Amazon organized its first AWS user event in 2012 in Las Vegas
  • CIA picked AWS over IBM for private cloud in 2013 that increased the credibility of AWS
  • RedShift was launched as a part of AWS to increase its data processing capabilities
  • AWS achieved $4.6 billion revenue in 2014 and expected an increase of 49% by 2015
  • In 2015-16, AWS launched Snowball and Snowmobile to migrate large volume of data between office and AWS data centers
  • AWS started focusing on regional data center strategy in 2016
  • AWS registered $12.2 billion of revenue in 2016
  • AWS now offers nearly 100 cloud services for networking, security, database storage, mobile development, email, compute and IoT
  •  In 2018, AWS announced for hybrid cloud product called Outposts

Features of AWS

Here we will learn about AWS features briefly.

  • Remote Access and Services - Amazon provides apps for iOS as well as Android platforms to develop, test, and maintain applications.
  • Infrastructure as a Service - By providing Infrastructure as a Service, AWS helps organizations to keep their entire focus on developing solutions and applications.
  • Covers all ranges of software - No matter what software you are using or planning to develop, AWS assists in terms of database management, storage, and networking for every type of software.
  • Security Feature - The security of AWS is port level and associated with Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances. The security feature of AWS monitors the incoming and outgoing traffic of an EC2 instance.
  • Database - AWS provides high-performing databases that one can work upon quickly. You can choose a database as per your requirement, but it is always managed by AWS only.

AWS - Storage Machine

In this portion of the AWS tutorial, we will focus on some highly durable storage services. Let’s discuss each of them in brief.

  • Glacier - Amazon Glacier is a good option for long term cold storage.
  • Simple Storage Service (S3) - S3 offers scalable object storage for data backup and analytics.
  • Elastic Block Store (EBS) - It provides block-level storage volume so that data that is used with EC2 can be stored consistently.

AWS Tools

  • Amazon Cloud Formation - It is used in automating infrastructure and system configuration
  • Identity and Access Management (IAM) - You can create users by using IAM and grant or revoke access of AWS resources to or from them.
  • Amazon Elastic Beanstalk - With EBS, you can easily work on an application and manage it without thinking much about the infrastructure required to operate that application.

AWS - Quick-Performing Databases

We will discuss some databases of AWS in this part of the AWS tutorial. Let’s explore some of them.

  • Redshift - It provides a data warehouse so that data analysts can easily perform analysis actions to filter out meaningful and actionable business insights.
  • Dynamo DB - Through Dynamo DB, AWS provides managed NoSQL databases
  • Elasticache - AWS users can choose either Elasticache or Dynamo DB as in memory-data caches for reliable and highly available real-time applications.
  • RDS - With Amazon RDS, you can replicate your databases - Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server to Amazon RDS.

Pros and Cons  of AWS

  • It offers a secure and durable platform ensuring the security and integrity of data
  • In terms of cost, AWS is cost-effective since you have to pay only for what you use. There is no extra investment
  • AWS is very flexible so you can choose any coding language that can help you generate business benefit
  • AWS has amazing infrastructure capabilities due to its 15 years of experience

  • You need to pay technical support fees in the form of a developer, enterprise, or business assistance.
  • You may have to face general cloud issues while moving business to the cloud such as backup, data protection, and downtime

AWS - Careers

  • The rapid growth in AWS has proved that organizations are ready to invest for technologies like cloud and data warehousing for quick and intelligent business decision
  • Not only IT but companies in other industries as well are looking for cloud
  • These increasing stats is enough to showcase that making a career as an AWS professional will always help you grow

Here, we have shared enough information regarding the AWS tutorial for beginners. Right from understanding the objective of AWS to what AWS is exactly, we covered everything. In addition to that, we also went through the history, storage services, database machines, AWS tools, pros and cons of AWS, and how it is good to make a career in the AWS field.
