Mark Twain also was known as Samuel L Clemens was born on 30th November 1835 in a tiny village of Florida, Missouri. He was the sixth child to John and Jane Clemens.
When Mark Twain was around 4 years old, he along with his parents shifted to Hannibal, a town consisting of about 1000 people. Sam lost his father when he was 12 years old, and left schooling thereafter to support his family financially. He started working as a novice printer at the Hannibal courier, which provided him with a skimpy ration of food. At the age of 15, he got employment as a printer and occasional writer and editor at the Hannibal Western Union, which was a small newspaper company owned by his brother Orion.
At the age of 21 years, around 1857, Sam started learning the art of piloting steamboat on the Mississippi River. By the year 1859, Sam became a licensed pilot and soon got a regular job of plying the Mississippi River and its channels.
In 1861 Sam left for Nevada and California, and there he started prospecting for gold, hoping to make a good fortune. But nothing went according to plans, and soon he got broke.
In September 1861, he started working as a reporter for Virginia City Territorial Enterprise and began writing under the pen name Mark Twain.
Soon he became the best-known story writers of the West. By 34 years of age, Mark Twain established himself as one of the most popular writers of American history.
Some of his popular works include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Innocents Abroad, etc.
