RANK AND PROMOTION PROCEDURE IN MERCHANT NAVY

 

There are several ranks in merchant navy. I will start from deck side then go to engine side. This blog will give you step by step procedure of promotion in merchant navy. It also includes details of sea time (sailing time) required for each rank to get upper rank.

 Let’s start the knowledge tour.

DECK SIDE:-

DECK CADET

 

 

 


18 MONTHS SEATIME+4 MONTHS FUNCTION COURSE(WRITTEN PREPRATION) +WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMS(6 WRITTEN PAPER,3 ORAL EXAMS)

                                                                                                                                                   

 

THIRD OFFICER

Candidate will get certificate of second officer but includes third officer too. That means we have to sail as third officer for some time then on ship promotion is given by company and captain decision for SECOND OFFICER.

 

2ND OFFICER

From 3rd officer to 2nd officer promoted on the basis of performance and appraisal.

18 MONTHS SEATIME+4 MONTHS FUNCTION COURSE (WRITTEN PREPRATION) +WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMS(5 WRITTEN PAPER FOR phase1 exam)+(5 written paper and 3 oral exams for phase2)

 

There is requirement for taking chief officer exam written above. This exam is little bit different than second officer exam. Candidates have to appear 2 times for written exams In phase1 and phase2.

 

          CHIEF OFFICER

 

2 YEARS SEA TIME AS A CHIEF OFFICER+ ONE ORAL EXAM+2 WRITTEN EXAMS

                                                                              

 

CAPTAIN (MASTER)

Captain is last rank on ship in merchant navy. But if someone wants to do more studies then they can EXTRA MASTER exam. But this exam is not going to benefit you on ship. You will be captain only because there is no rank above it on ship.

 

CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP:- It is the top most rank on a ship. It is also called MASTER. HE/SHE is responsible for whole ship in term of safety, operation, management etc.

 

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BE A CAPTAIN: - No one can tell you the exact time for becoming a captain because it is totally depend on candidate. You will be promoted on the basis of your exams only.

 

ENGINE SIDE:-

ENGINE CADET/JUNIOR ENGINEER

6 MONTHS SAILING TIME+MEO WRITTEN+ORAL EXAMS CONDUCTED BY GOVT. OF INDIA

 

 


4TH ENGINEER

As per performance overall onboard you will be promoted as

 3RD ENGINEER

 

 


12 MONTHS SEA TIME+ WRITTEN EXAMS+ ORAL EXAMS 

 

 


2ND ENGINEER

18 MONTHS SEA TIME+ WRITTEN EXAMS+ ORAL EXAMS

 

 

CHIEF ENGINEER

 This post is last rank in merchant navy in engine department. Chief engineer is responsible for engine department in term of operation, management and safety.

 

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BE A CHIEF ENGINEER:- Indeed it requires lot of hard work and patience. This also is the same case as captain, nobody can give you the exact time for becoming a chief engineer. By clearing your exams fast you can achieve this rank.
