Learning Management Systems (LMS) are a more standard and common eLearning Platform. However, more recently Learning Content Management System Software (LCMS or LCMSS) has grown in popularity.
When choosing the best platform for your organization, it can be confusing to try and figure out the differences between these two systems and which one is best for you.
Keep reading and we will explain the differences, when you should choose one system over the other, and whether or not you can use both.
First, let’s start by explaining the differences between an LMS and an LCMS. This will allow you to understand when each system is better suited for a team, to allow you to make the best choice for your organization.
Learning Management System (LMS) are systems focused on training. These systems allow each student or employee to have personalized training based on the experience and knowledge they already have, rather than having to follow the same training program as someone with more or less experience.
This is useful if you are training people with a variety of different backgrounds or end goals, as they can all have unique learning programs.
You can also use an LMS system to keep track of who is participating in the training, both online and in person. These systems are common in corporate settings and higher education programs to educate large groups of people.
In comparison, Learning Content Management System Software (LCMS) is more, as the name suggests, for the creation of training and educational content, rather than teaching. So where LMS is more for students or employees that are being educated, an LCMS is more for managers and teachers.
LCMS is useful for groups of people to work on and share the content creation aspect. LMS systems don’t allow you to make the training information, and instead, you have to import from different software.
LCMS allows you to create, store, manage, and edit any learning content. You can also use it to educate, but it doesn’t have as many features as an LMS system.
Yes, using both is more than fine. These two systems might even work best for you when used in parallel. Though many sites compare these two, saying you have to choose one or the other, the truth is that, while they have some overlap, they can be used for different parts of your learning platform.
An LCMS is great for teams that are working to create the learning content. It allows collaboration and sharing of various learning tools. Where an LMS is more used by those that are being educated, this system is more of use for those that are making the training program.
If you only have one or two people making the learning content or have a pre-made set of content, there may be no need for you to use an LCMS, and you can simply use an LMS.
On the other hand, if you are only making training videos and sending them out to other people, or just want to focus on the content portion of the learning system, an LCMS is a great option for you, and there is no need for your company to use an LMS.
It is also an option if you want to create more personalized training paths for each individual or group, rather than set training.
However, if you are making, sharing, and wanting people to use your eLearning content to learn, it might be worthwhile to have both. Despite their overlap, each system has enough differences that it is worth using both.
