How to stay focused while studying: 26 November, 2020   

It is not easy for students to go to college or university. While it is a massive step in their academic life, there are times when they face difficulty, mainly because schools had a different environment than that of a college or university. The pressure there was less, and students had plenty of time to themselves, but there is so much work to do and tons of distractions in college. And while it is difficult to lose focus while working and studying, it can be changed and turned into a strength.

The reasons for getting distracted:

Several students face this issue that they lose attention every time they sit down to study and find it difficult to concentrate. That stems from several reasons. They might be surrounded by flashy things or their interest, making it difficult for them to focus. For example, if your desk is surrounded by paintings and portraits or other cool stuff on the wall. Chances are your mind will become fixated, and you will find it tough to go back to studying. It can also be because of your phone or digital devices. If you have your phone in your hand and continually keeps buzzing or ringing at every new notification alert, you will find it difficult to concentrate. You would want to check every notification, and that is a massive distraction in itself. It gets quite challenging if you live with a roommate. If they are in the room and doing something else like eating, singing, or any other chore, you will most likely start looking at them or conversing with them, and then you will fall behind in your work. Students who live in dorms or shared rooms in an apartment know this struggle all too well. Especially the students who live in mixed dorms because focusing on your things is not comfortable when you are surrounded by hundreds of students who want to have fun and enjoy their freedom.

Easy ways to stay focused on your work/studies:

·         Remove all distractions:

The biggest hurdle there is to studying whole-heartedly is distractions. And they are everywhere. If you study in your dorm room, they are so small that chances are you will be sitting on your bed or the floor with your books all around, studying. When you do not have a proper space, you will keep losing focus every time you see someone move or when your roommate passes you by. It is best to choose a spot where you face a wall since you will not know what is happening around you. Choose that part of the room where you can sit and face the wall and then put in earplugs or earphones without any music on. By doing this, you will be unable to see or hear anything distracting. Not just that but set a period in which you want to study every day. Tell your roommate not to disturb you at that time so that you can have your peace of mind as well.

·         Set daily targets:

Make a plan at the end of each week and set a daily target for each day. Set it by breaking down your monthly syllabus into weeks and then by setting a goal. For example, if you want to get done with all the practice questions in a particular subject, set a goal that, in 3 days, you need to do them all. Then divide the total number of problems per day, so you know how many you have to solve in a day. Likewise, do that with other subjects and office work too, and by the end, you will know how much you have covered and how much you need to do. That checklist will keep pushing your brain to give it your all since you will be aware of what you need to do and will have specific goals to achieve.

·         Give yourself breaks:

The biggest reason people lose focus is that they overwork to an extent where their brains give themselves a time out. So, challenge yourself to study straight without any distractions for 20 minutes, and then after every 20 minutes, take a break of 5 minutes. Keep repeating this process and then slowly increase your productive time. It will train your mind to work more efficiently for a more extended amount of time. Not only this, but you can reward yourself by using your mobile for 5 minutes, or by stretching or lying down. That is the most feasible option since it will help you relax and get more focused.

·         Keep track of yourself:

The most crucial thing in all this is to keep track of yourself. Understand how much time you slack off and spend distracted and how much time you were productive. By doing this, you will be pressurising your brain to work well since it will know what it has to accomplish. Once you start noting the time you waste by looking around or by being lost in your thoughts, you will be more inclined to work even harder so you can make up for the lost time.

·         Reward yourself:

Learn to reward yourself when you complete your goals for the week. Once you get done with everything you were supposed to do and that too on time, it is time you give yourself a little more than a pat on the back. You can go and reward yourself with your favourite candy bar, or you can spend some time watching Netflix. But remember, whatever you do, do it in moderation, so your brain knows that this is what it will get in return for working hard.

Use these tips in your daily life to see how big of a difference it makes. You will find yourself more focused and poised and no matter what happens, make sure you always follow the same routine. It will add order to your life, and focusing will become a whole lot easier.
