CoronaVirus- Disease or sign of reformation? 10 August, 2020

Corona Virus- Disease or sign of reformation?

Corona Virus or the well-known Covid-19 originated from the Huanan seafood wholesale market during December 2019. The early traces of covid-19 lead us to bats being the host of this virus. During late December the internet was flooding with pictures of Chinese eating bats and that being the whole epicenter of corona. This virus was spread by the close contact between people, often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing or while talking. Wuhan was the first to witness the outbreak of corona and the number of people infected were increasing exponentially, as a result Wuhan had to be locked down to prevent the further spread of Corona virus.

The symptoms of this disease were a mere cold, cough and respiratory problems, these symptoms would show up ten days after the person was actually infected. This was a dangerous aspect, what turned out to be even worse was during this span of ten days for the virus to emerge to the surface and show up symptoms, the infected person would have contacted many more people before he himself knew that he was infected, which made it very difficult to track the infected number of people. Since this disease was spread through contact, many people on their business trips turned out to be on the front line of victims. Very soon all the corporates started to cancel their business trip to other countries in order to prevent their employees from getting infected. But sooner or later the virus had already made its home to many of the countries. So, it had made its way to India as well by the end of Jan. India being a densely populated country was in a threat to handle this. Soon the government started taking preventive measures to fight against covid, public places shut down, cinema halls closed and major public gatherings cancelled. The corporate companies slowly asked their employees to work from home as the virus was hitting the shores of IT industries. India had around 300 cases by mid-March when the honorable prime minister took a decision to lock down the nation so that the situation can still be under our control. “Janata Curfew” (self-lock down) announced by PM Narendra Modi on March 22 which was a trial run of actual lock down which was to be implemented further. This was followed by a 3-week lock down.

During this 3-week lock down the nation was completely shut down, with people starting to work from home(the software geeks), else sitting idle enjoying the vacation when the nation was hit by a deadly virus. Soon people started to give different perspectives to the origin of Corona. Starting from “China’s deliberate mistake during laboratory trials that led to Covid” to it is all the “act of God” for the earth to heal itself for all the blunders Humans have made for years from the beginning of the Universe. Is it because really people were idle so these thoughts were emerging? Or was it equally true?  As the days passed by, the pollution levels in major metro cities had reduced to lowest in decades, rivers flowing with fresh water and aquatics returning back to their habitat, skies were clearer than ever. There was this popular meme making its way in social media that the Himalayan Range was visible from Jalandhar(Punjab) which was never witnessed before. Alongside bonds within the families got stronger in a way that parents and their children were living together as earlier they would live far apart from each other demanded by the high paying tech jobs, the families had started enjoying a nice time.

So was this good? Was this bad? There are two aspects of perception here. If we look through the economic perspective then there were huge losses to the country as everything had come to halt, no revenue was generated and many companies started shutting down their offices because the international market was hit very badly. Government underwent losses worth thousands of crores. But if we look at the humanity perspective and the environmental perspective there were a lot of improvements that never happened before.

Environmental perspective: With the growth of technology, we started racing towards development from generations and progressed to an extent that we had forgotten we were spoiling our own ecosystem running behind that development which could make us idle one day or which could bring the whole world to halt. Very late did we realise the negative effects of urbanisation and made numerous efforts to save the environment, be it rallies to stop deforestation, investing crores in projects to purify the holy rivers, none of these stopped humans from exhibiting their cruel nature towards the planet Earth in the name of development and finding life on other planets in the universe because we humans were certain that this planet would be unfit for us to live someday in the future. What’ s funny was we used our brains to find life on other planets only if we had used the same to find out how we improve the existing state. Now we are thrown into such a state that though it's been months since the virus started its game, we are unable to find the vaccine and even place to bury the bodies in some countries, even though we have brilliant scientists around the world who can explore the space. The question that’s still revolving around my mind is was it necessary for a deadly virus to make us realise all this? Aren’t humans intelligent enough? This leads us to the fact that we always expect a better way of life when we have a lot of problems in the existing one which are solvable, but we still want a better one only to spoil the new one as well.

The Humanity perspective: With the outbreak of the virus and most of the non IT guys and students being idle and even the IT guys being more stress-free at home everyone started thinking about how they can best utilise this time to learn something new. In this regard they started exploring their interests ranging from taking up a course online in their areas of interests to the working professionals considering better career opportunities understanding that they were doing something they were not interested in. Again, my question arises here: did we need to be hit by a virus to understand all these? Didn’t we know what our interests were before? The question remains unanswered…As a result there were many sites offering free courses. Not only did people think of improving their professional skills  but many elderly people started indulging themselves in Yoga and physical exercises which they hadn't been doing despite having diabetes. So this virus led to a bundle of opportunities to transform lives and transform Earth. It threw a challenge to push the best of human minds to their extremes and to find a better way to explore for every individual.

But all this was at the cost of some deaths, probably the population was too large to keep everything intact and solve the problems that we ourselves gave birth to, so there had to be a cut down for nature to breathe in and heal. I remember certain movies and web Series mentioning that half of the population had to be wiped out for the world to be a better place.

In the movie “Avengers: Infinity War” the character Thanos wants to kill half of the universe in order to maintain balance, because Thanos believed that rapid increase in life was depleting the finite resources at an unsustainable rate which would eventually cause destruction of the universe. Similarly in the season 2 of Web Series “Sacred Games” the guruji wants to destroy Mumbai and start new world of Satyug, because after years of observation he believes how humanity has been on self-destructive mode since time immemorial , and comes to conclusion that he needs to hit reset button so that only a few will survive and that he will be the God in this new world. So these stories lead to an interesting fact that there is an end to the World but it may arrive in different ways which we never expect. In the current situation the deadly virus may also be a form that came to wipe out part of the universe so that we humans can extend our lifetime on this planet for a longer period of time. This might be the start of the ending story of a universe where people are dying in lakhs even without places left for them to be buried, but certainly there is an end we all have to face in the future. Whether all this is the act of God as some priests call it or its just the lack of human science that lead to this is still unknown and a certain aspect to be considered.
