Himalayas is a gigantic mountain range in Asia, whose mystic beauty enthralls and inspires every one. These mountains almost cover 2400 km and stretch across India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Bhutan and Nepal. They cover about 0.4 percent of  Earth's surface area.

It is believed that the Himalayas were formed due to a massive collision between India and Asia around 700 million years ago. The impact had global repercussions.

Mount Everest, which is the highest peak of the entire planet, is situated here. It's height is 8,848 m, and it was first climbed by Tenzing Norgay from Nepal and Edmund Hillary from New Zealand in 1953. Other notable soaring peaks include K2 and Nanga Parbat.

Himalayas are rich in their natural beauty,  and here the diversity of landscapes is immense. The elevations give us the view of snow-capped mountains, and as we go down we come across lush green valleys and dense jungles. Some of the rarest animals and birds are found in these jungles like snow leapords, Tibetan sheep, rare Asian elephants and musk deer.

Three great rivers, Indus, Yangtze and the Ganga-Brahmaputra, originate from the Himalayas. These are major river systems for most parts of Asia, and hold a vital place for the economy of some countries.

After Antarctica and the Arctic the Himalayas have the largest deposits of ice and snow in the world. The whole range comprises of approximately 15,000 glaciers. The Siachen glacier is the largest glacier of Himalayas, and has a length of 48 miles.

The mountain range is also associated with much folklore and mythology. The Nepalese term Mt. Everest as the "Goddess of the Universe". According to Hindus their god Shiva resides here.

Another interesting fact about the Himalayas is that they are geologically alive. It means they are growing in size, and research shows that this increase is about 20 mm per year.

Himalayas is a place with divine beauty and unparalleled serenity. People who are lucky enough to visit that splendid mountain range are not able to forget its charm for many years.
