How to Wake up Early: 10 Proven Tips (Infographic)

Quick! How many clichés and truisms can you think of about waking up early?

I think the most common one is: “The early bird gets the worm.”

Does it really, though? The morning people among us would agree, but what about the rest of us?

Before you get up in arms at the thought of early mornings and worms, why not try one of the tips in the infographic below?

Keep your alarm out of reach.

Whenever we try to rouse ourselves from sleep in the morning, it’s tempting to hit that snooze button and sleep a few minutes more. That can turn into a habit; that snooze button ain’t your friend. Keep the alarm out of arm’s reach, so that you have to get up and move a little to shut it off.

Motivate yourself to get out of bed when the alarm rings.

What are the things you like in the morning? A good cup of coffee? A quick dance-along to one of your favorite songs? A shower with a delicious-smelling shower gel? Cuddling with your favorite pet? Make sure it’s something you have to get out of bed to do. If you’re feeling decadent, dare I suggest a big mouthful of ice cream (hey anything for motivation, right)?

Get a good 7 hours of sleep (at least)!

You need to work with your body’s clock, not against it. To support all your natural physiological and mental processes, you need to give yourself enough time to recharge, before sunlight comes in and disturbs your REM cycle. If you sleep early, your body will be recharged within 7 - 9 hours. Everyone has their own requirement, but 7 hours is a minimum. When your body has had enough sleep, it’ll automatically want to wake up and start the day, like when your phone has a full battery after recharging.

Wake up at the same time every day.

It takes about 40 days to establish a habit, but only one day to break it. Lovingly cultivated, if you make your best effort to wake up at the same time every day (which is as simple as setting your alarm at the same time), it will be that much easier for you to get up early for life.

Do things that awaken your senses and be energized.

Awakening your senses of taste, touch, smell, sound, and sight might be an odd solution to waking up early. Don’t overthink it. It could be something as simple as sleeping with the curtains open so that your eyes are hit with natural light at sunrise. It could be a coffee maker with an alarm set to when you wake up. Get creative.

Start waking up 15 minutes earlier every day to become an early riser.

If you’re getting up at 8:00 am every day, and your target wake-up time is 6:00 am, waking up 2 hrs early may be too much of a leap for you. Since the change you intend to make is hopefully long term, sustainable, organic, and gradual, start waking up at 7:45 am on day one, and then scale it back from there.

Go back to sleep immediately if you wake up in the middle of the night.

If you wake up in the middle of the night, there must be a good reason for it.

You might have to go to the bathroom, or had a nightmare, or maybe it’s too hot for you to sleep. This isn’t an excuse for you to stay up all night, though. Do what you can to go back to sleep as soon as possible, lest it disturb your well-earned sleep.  

Doing regular exercise will eventually help you to wake up early.

A moderate shot of cardiovascular exercise will help get rid of your residual energy. As a result, your body will be more ready to rest at night.

Plan your next day as you fall asleep to wake up with purpose.

It is natural that you must have your clothes, lunch, accessories, documents and other essentials laid out ready for the next day. Before you fall asleep, think of the important things you have to do for the next day. It could be therapeutic and help avoid overthinking as you try to sleep. Also, the things you intend to do before you sleep, stay in your subconscious and often become your first thoughts in the morning.

Try to analyze why you are sleeping late.

Depending on what sort of a person you are, this step could either be very interesting or a total snooze-fest(haha, see what I did there). Do some reading into the accounts of other people and their reasons for sleeping late. Do you have anything in common with them, such as heavy, late dinners? Late exercise sessions? An electronic device addiction (doesn’t everyone)? Going out late? You might need to reschedule your life or organize it better. If the millionaires and billionaires of the world can do it, imagine how a schedule change could help you!  


Having read about just ten of the ways to help you wake up early might help you perform better in a morning person’s world. It’s all about having more time to get things done during the day because that’s the schedule on which most of the world works. You can always take a nap later!
