9 Leaking Problems that Can Seriously Endanger Your Home 21 December, 2020

Just like everywhere in the world, accidents may happen inside your home. Whether it's a broken appliance or water leaking problem, you need to solve the issue as soon as possible to prevent it from damaging your home. That's why you need to be able to detect some of the most common leaking problems in your home.

If you notice large amounts of water pooling around in your home, odd smells or tapping sounds, chances are you have a leaking problem. Therefore, you need to detect and solve that problem as soon as possible to avoid possible damages to your home that can even endanger your health. What are the most common problems?

1. Dripping tap

One of the most common problems almost every household face is a dripping tap. Besides producing the annoying tapping sound, this type of problem can endanger your home. How? This problem can range from very mild, such as not closing the water tap properly, to serious, like a damaged washer.

How can you detect the cause? One of the first things you need to do is shut off the water completely. Closely inspect the tap to determine the cause of the problem.

It can be something minimal such as piled up debris that should be cleaned easily, or something more serious, like a damaged vent or the entire tap. In that case, the replacement is necessary. It will not only save you money and water but also stop producing the annoying tapping sound.

2. Leaking radiator

A lot of homes around the world use radiators during the winter to keep their homes warm. However, from time to time, some radiators simply start leaking. What may be the cause of that? It all depends on the type of radiator you have. So, what should you do?

Look for the wet patches or puddles below your radiator. To determine the exact location of the leak, dry the radiator and use a paper towel to detect where the leak is coming from. There are two most common locations of the leaks: one being the radiator body, the other, the valve.

If you notice that the radiator body is the issue, there is nothing much you can do but replace the entire body. It happens due to corrosion. On the other hand, you're lucky if the valve is the only problem. This issue is easily solved by closing the partly open valve and letting out the water out of the radiator.

3. Plastic water pipe and water pipe joint

A leaky plastic water pipe is a problem you can easily fix yourself. The first thing you need to do is determine where it's leaking from. Even though this may seem like a simple task, you need to keep in mind that water is tricky.

The water leaked out of the pipe can flow down the outer part of the pipe before turning into a puddle. Therefore, make sure to dry the pipe before trying to detect where the leak is coming from. So, how can you fix this?

Once you've detected the location of the leak, turn off the water. When it comes to fixing, you have two options. The first one is getting a waterproof tape to tape the problematic area. The other one is to simply replace the pipe or the joint that is creating a leak. The choice is yours.

4. Clogged drains

Have you noticed the water pooling around your drains with a foul smell? Chances are you have clogged drains that are causing the water to back up and create damage and mess on your floors. Who would want to live like that? This problem needs to be sorted out as soon as possible.

Depending on the cause of the leaks, the issue varies from easily fixable leaks to complicated leaks. The first thing you need to check out is what is clogging your drain? Is it debris, hair, food or something else? Make sure you thoroughly clean the drain. If you can't seem to find anything, it's time for a closer inspection.

Always check out the compression nut between the drain and the pipe. If the compression nut is loose, it will create leaks. Some of the more complicated issues include ill-fitted pipes and pipes that need to be replaced as soon as possible to prevent further damages to your home.

5. Pipes

Believe it or not, pipes need to be the right size for your drain. For instance, pipes that are too short and those that are too long may be causing problems for your drains which will result in leaks and damages. Therefore, if you have ill-fitted or worn-out pipes that are starting to leak, you need to get them replaced as soon as possible.

Can you replace the pipes by yourself? It depends on the pipes' location. If they are deep under the ground or not easily reached, it is advised to call the experts such as the experienced Canberra plumbers. Only the professional plumbers will know how to replace the leaking pipes without creating additional damage to your home.

Besides that, finding the plumbers that are available whenever you call them is hard. They will try their best to fix your pipe problem and prevent further damages to your home.

6. Toilet

Toilet leaks are one of the most difficult to detect. They can happen for numerous reasons. Additionally, toilets can leak dirty or clean water. It all depends on where the problem is located.  So, what should you do?

If you notice that the water is coming from below the toilet or from the toilet bowl, stop using it immediately. Chances are that's dirty water that will damage your floors and/or the ceiling underneath your apartment with contaminated water. In cases like these, you might need to replace the entire toilet.

On the other hand, if the leak is coming from the cistern, the solution is simpler. You can just adjust the ballcock or the float to prevent your cistern from overflowing.

7. Bath and shower

Believe it or not, baths and showers can leak as well. There are numerous problems that may cause the leaks, so you should check them all. One of the most common issues is the seal around the drain hole. In case the seal is broken or damaged, it can cause the water to overflow and leak.

The more complicated issue may be regarding the pipes that lead water to your tap and showerhead. This type of issue can often go unnoticed until the walls and tiles start to deteriorate. To fix this type of problem, you might need to remove the side of your tub or shower to get to the pipes.

Third common leak problem that can occur happens when the silicone seal around the tub starts to get worn out. It can naturally happen over time. So, if you notice that the silicone is letting moisture through your bathtub, make sure to seal it as soon as possible.

8. Under-sink leaks

Do you notice the water in your under-sink cabinet? You probably have a leaky pipe or drain that is causing the water to pool around the bottom, making significant damages. Besides damaging your cabinet, this type of leak can also create an unbearable smell. So, is there a way to change it?

If you're remodeling your home's kitchen, it might be an ideal time to check out the pipes around your sink as well. This type of issue is fairly easy to pinpoint and fix. So, the first step you need to do is shut off the water.

Once the water is off, slowly unscrew the pipe that leads from the drain to the hole in your wall. If you notice the problem is caused by the pipe, replace it as soon as possible. On the other hand, if the pipe is fine, chances are your drain is damaged. Therefore, you'll need to replace it as well.

9. Refrigerator and dishwasher

If there is water pooling around on your kitchen floor but you don't know its cause, chances are your appliances may be leaking.

One of the most common leaks from the appliances is caused by the dishwasher. If you haven't properly closed the door, or the seal around the door is damaged, you'll notice leaks that can damage your appliances and the floor.

Similarly, if you have an ice dispenser in your fridge that is damaged or raptured, it can also leak creating damage on the floor, fridge and even on the wall. So, make sure you check your appliances for damages frequently if you use them daily.

Conclusion

These are only some of the most common leaks that can happen in every home. If you notice a strange body of water on your floor, you may be having a leak. So, try to detect its cause and fix it as soon as possible to prevent it from seriously damaging your home and other appliances in it.
