8 Best Careers For Women That Pay Well 20 March, 2019

Women have ventured into almost all careers. Not only that, but the pioneers also left significant marks wherever they went, that the others can follow. The best career path for each woman depends on a lot of factors like interests, skills, work environment, education, availability of jobs, family situation/responsibilities, etc. Therefore, every choice made is unique.

The following is the list of 8 best careers for women that pay a good sum of money. All these professions pay women about $65,000 to $90,000 per year on an average, where the exact pay depends on the job, their skill level and their position in the hierarchy.

1. Pharmacist

Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who, depending on the legal scope of practice, prescribe, dispense, or administer drugs, and may occasionally give medical advice on usage of drugs. Depending on the country or region of practice, pharmacists are required to have pharmacology or medical related degree. Usually, if they serve to dispense drugs, such a degree is not required. Licenses to practice this profession can also be obtained without having a college degree, by just passing a few required exams. Female pharmacists earn a good average of $95,628 per year.

2. Nurse

Nursing is another profession that comes under the healthcare sector, which focuses on assisting a medical professional to help an individual recover quickly and maintain an optimal life. In history, nurses have always predominantly been women, but nowadays there is an increase in male nurses too. The reason for the higher percentage of female nurses is that naturally, they tend to be more caring for the patient which may stem from a motherly instinct. The annual income of female nurses is around $90,000 per year.

3. Lawyer

A lawyer is a person who can handle all kinds of legal matters, starting from writing patent claims to defending people against criminal/domestic charges to drafting wills. All lawyers have to attend law school and pass a bar exam to practice law. Lawyers may also be referred to as an attorney, solicitor, barrister or counselor, based on the region or country in which they practice.

Being a lawyer is viewed as a challenging job and is one of the few careers that span the length of non-profit to the government to private sectors. The growing support for women in this profession is not only to bring a balance in workplace dynamics but also to support different career goals. It is, therefore, one of the best careers for women.

Working as a lawyer has increased the potential for pay since legal advice never comes cheap. The average income for a female lawyer is $84,188.

4. Software Developer

These people are the creative minds that drive computer programs. While some developers work on creating applications that people use directly, others write the underlying code that runs the device or executes specific programs. Their main duties include:

•    Designing, developing, and testing software

•    Recommended and carry out software updates for a client’s devices

•    Create optimum software for a device

•    Create models and diagrams that programmers can follow for developing a code

There used to be huge setbacks for women in this field such as receiving lesser pay than their male counterparts, denial of promotion, assignment of menial tasks, etc. However, this trend is changing where both the employees and the executives want to change the highly toxic male-dominated field. Women software developers earn a yearly average of about $80,000.

5. Physician assistants

Physician assistants are supposedly ranked number 4 in medicine and healthcare related jobs. These are people who have obtained a license to diagnose and treat illnesses and disease. They may also prescribe medication for patients. They usually work in collaboration with a physician in hospitals, clinics, and physician offices. In most cases, since the educational training for a physician assistant follows the one for physicians strictly, they have a degree of autonomy in treating patients. They are generally allowed to:

•    Check with the medical history.

•    Diagnose laboratory tests

•    Patient counseling

•    Assist in surgeries.

Reports suggest that 70% of physician assistants are women, but there used to exist a bias in pay- male counterparts used to receive about 10% more pay than their female counterparts. This trend is changing for the better now, and female physician assistants now earn an excellent yearly average of about $80,000.

6. Engineer

Engineers are those who apply scientific and mathematical methods to innovate and design materials, machines, and processes for the benefit of all humankind. The main branches of engineering are mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and biomedical engineering. What has always been viewed as a male-dominated field is now slowly being penetrated by women. They have shown remarkable success in all branches of engineering, whether the job is labor-intensive or not. It is therefore in the list of best careers for women. This has largely got to do with the increase in educational opportunities for women, where earlier some fields of study were denied for women. The earlier existing disparity arose from the fact that it was stereotypical to assume that men were better engineers than women and that complex problems couldn’t be dumbed down for them. The average yearly pay for female engineers is around $70,000 to $75,000.

7. Human Resources Manager

The function of Human Resources Managers is to plan, direct, and coordinate the administrative functions of an organization. They are the people that oversee the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of new staff. Human resource managers often consult with top executives on strategic planning and act as a bridge between an organization's management and its employees.

The educational qualifications required to become a human resource manager is usually just a bachelor’s degree in management, though some companies may require an additional master’s degree. The most important factor that makes a good HR manager is having excellent interpersonal skills, as they are not only involved in hiring employees, but also in conveying management’s unhappiness with a certain employee or division’s conduct, and also in firing. Female human resource managers earn anywhere between $65,000 to $75,000 per year on an average.

8. Doctor

A doctor or a physician is a person who promotes, maintains, or restores the health of an individual by studying and diagnosing their disease, illness, injury, or impairment. Doctors, especially those who specialize in a particular field are always sought after and are in demand. Off late, people choose women doctors over male doctors because:

•    Female doctors spend the time to listen

•    They are less likely to interrupt a patient when they narrate their problem

•    Women doctors seem more compassionate and kind to the patients

These are some of the reasons as to why it is considered to be among the best careers for women. Also, studies show that women doctors show a higher percentage of patients who get better and that women treated by men are least likely to survive. This is because the way that men and women doctors practice medicine is fundamentally different. Female doctors earn roughly about $70,000 to $80,000 per year.

Apart from these professions, there are also others such as CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and Computer & Information Systems Manager like jobs which can be best careers for women, while also creating an interesting work environment. Though there can't be just one profession that is considered to be the best career for a woman, the above is a conclusive list of jobs where women can apply their skills according to their interest and reap the benefit regarding pay.
