We live in a world where we hear cases of crime on a regular basis. No matter how far we have come and no matter how much we call our self as the most civilized people. Criminal cases have become so common these days that most of us do not even bother to know what happened. This is simply because of the regularity that has come up with the crimes these days.

If you want to find a new crime story; all you have to do is to open your newspaper and started reading the first page. Your morning will start with the horror of countless tragedies and criminal issues that happened all just in one day.

The most dreadful thing about all of this is that it is not happening only in a specific country, every nation is taking the scars of criminals and this is what makes the humanity go backward in the run, and we are getting into the slumber inch by inch with every passing day.

There are tons of famous criminal cases through this century but some of them were different and by different what I mean is more disastrous, and bigger of a mess than the other ones. These were not just some ordinary crimes that come and go after a week of the limelight. These criminal events left a big scar on the 21st century and shook us all to the marrow. 

This article packs both knowledge and an eerie sense of cringe. So, without further ado, let's start the list of the most famous criminal cases that happened in the 21st century.

1. The grim sleeper

A case that involves murders, a lot of murders. This case is about a man named Lonnie David Franklin Jr. who killed somewhat around 10 to 25+ victims in the time span of 1985 to 2007. He got the nickname ‘Grim Sleeper' because of his act of being out of his pathetic killing spree for 14 long years.

His killings that are known by the police department starts from the year of 1985 which takes a hiatus of 14 years from 1988 to 2002. Among his 12 known killings, only one male individual was concerned. His murders were more of women based and the reasons for him being on a killing spree are unknown to the date. He was arrested in June 2010 and a case against him was set for trial in February of 2016 and later in the August of the same year, he was sentenced to death as the penalty for killings nice women and a teenager girl.

2. Aaron Hernandez

Another one among the famous criminal cases that shows how a single event can ruin an individual's whole life and what small things can make a person lose his sanity and take him to such a brink where they are forced so much that they go for the option of suicide. Aaron Hernandez, an American Football tight end who has a great future in the football and was working his way up in the chain to get to the big leagues.

He was having a great career and was transferred to the New England Patriots in 2010 where he showed great sportsmanship, and with his diligent hard work, he was doing great when suddenly in the year 2013 he was convicted for a first-degree murder charge.

The whole football community in England went back in the shock of such a major event happening out of the blues. The case went forward, and in April 2015, he was found guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment that too without any parole issues. He suffered from mental trauma and harsh torture when he later committed suicide by hanging himself to death on April 19, 2017.

3. The McStay Family

A case that shocked all the business community around the globe. This event was such a grand disgrace over humanity that it will give you shivers just by reading about it. The McStay Family case revokes around Mr. Joseph McStay and his business partner Chase Merritt. In 2010, the McStay family including Mr. Joseph McStay (age 40), his wife Summer (age 43), his two sons Gianni (age 4) and Joseph Jr. (age 3) went missing.

Their house in Fallbrook, California, was found locked from inside out. Their dogs were found stranded in the backyard of the house without any food or water. The disappearance of the family was discovered by Michael McStay (brother of Joseph McStay). After years of investigation and searches, the sheriff department came to the action of taking Chase Merritt into custody as he was the last person whom Joseph contacted before the event of disappearance. The case was ruled in October 2018, and no such verdicts have come out yet.

4. The Killer Clown

Have you ever watched walking dead and said to your friends about how gruesome the last episode was. Well, if you find it gruesome, this event will freeze you being it's just the paramount of the term Gruesome. A man name Wayne Gacy who was by profession an Artist who used to visit the parties and events in the clown costume.

He was an American Serial killer and Rapist. He was charged for sexually assaulting more than 33 teenagers, and all were boys. This number of people was reached by him in just 6 years starting with 1972. He was caught when he was caught doing one of his gruesome crimes, and it does not end the way he thought it would go.

The teenager reported him, and the Chicago police department started investigating the case. Later it in the investigation of his house it was found out that there were somewhat 30 bodies of teenagers stacked up in the basement made 4 others were found in the neighbourhood. He was given a death sentence and was executed by a lethal injection on May 10, 1994.

5. Cleveland Strangler

This is one of the most famous criminal cases of the 21st century. It is about a man named Anthony Edwards Sowell who was charged with several cases, not just 10 or 20, He was charged for over 40 cases of a criminal offense. The man was once a marine and served the country under the united state marine corps. He was a well trained professional and his service was appreciated in the marines.

He was awarded several awards such as a Good Conduct Medal, a Meritorious mast etc. In the year 1989, he was charged for his first case of attempted rape and murder when he assaulted a three month pregnant. He was charged with attempted rape and Kidnapping for which he served 15 years in prison.

After his prison release, he went insane on a crime spree and accounted over 40+ criminal case which involves 11 counts of abuse of a corpse, 11 counts of aggravated murders, 4 counts of rape, 11 counts of tampering with evidence, 2 counts of kidnapping and 3 counts of attempted murder. With such a record he was sentenced to death and was executed on October 31, 2009.


So, these were some of the most famous criminal cases of the 21st century. Some of these are too gruesome to even think about while some actually creep out even the bravest of the people. These crimes show how even the best people who ones were such a great person can become a total disgrace on the name of humans.
