Mahatma Gandhi was a great Indian activist who led the campaign for independence. The great leader was born on 2nd October 1869 in India which is also the International Day of Nonviolence. He traveled to England to study a degree in law. After completing his degree, he traveled to South Africa to practice law. In South Africa, he witnessed similar oppression witnessed in India by colonizers. After staying for 21 years in South Africa, he returned to India and became the leader of the Indian nationalist movement. In India, he led and continued non-violent protests which included national strikes.
He asked his followers to prepare for independence. He wanted a peaceful takeover and often collided with other leaders who wanted Indians to overthrow British rule. In many occasions, he called off planned strikes and asked for peaceful demonstrations. In 1930 he led a march which violated British regulations, and many people were arrested. After the protests, the British agreed to grant India independence and indicated that they would partition the country into two: India and Pakistan. Since the division was religious, he worked to show that Muslims and Hindus could live together. Gandhi led the country to independence but was later assassinated in 1948 having accomplished his mission of having an independent country.
